OK, so you've tried everything, and you're just not losing any weight. You've been fat for years, you've been on all the diets, you don't have the willpower to keep anything up, and you're considering drastic measures. But just how dangerous are the more drastic ways of losing weight, and do they really work?
You should realise that hypnosis, herbal remedies, and other non-surgical options that sound too good to be true are always scams. Don't hand over any money for this sort of thing, even if you're desperatedesperation is what they feed off.
The surgical weight loss method that most people turn to first is liposuction. You should realise, however, that liposuction is not the miracle cure some make it out to beit can change the shape of your body slightly, but it can't make you lose all that weight overnight. The most fat that can be taken out in a single session is about 10 pounds, as taking more than that will cause your body to look lumpy and odd. Basically, removing large amounts of fat is a life-threatening operation that should not be entered into lightly, and even if it works, you will not look entirely normal at the end of it.
An alternative to liposuction that is gradually becoming more popular is stomach stapling. This sees the size of your stomach surgically reduced to limit the amount of food you can eat. An advantage is that the operation can be easily reversed, so you're not doing yourself any permanent damage. However, the more unpleasant side of it is that many people who have their stomach stapled in an attempt to lose weight find out that they simply end up vomiting up all their food again, as they do not stop eating when they feel full. Also, 1% of people who have their stomach stapled diea significant death rate compared to other surgical procedures. |
