Beginning Golf - a Guide

If you are just beginning your golf-playing career, you may feel that you are totally and completely lost, you probably are as a matter of course, but we all start somewhere. You may be someone who has watched games for years and hoped to get out on the course and try it or you may be someone who has never even bothered to watch a game of golf before. I dont blame you, golf is not the most exciting of spectator sportsthat is until you have your own appreciation for a beautiful shot. Trust me it is a much more interesting spectator sport once youve been beaten up and down the golf course by mother nature.

Even if youve watched the pros for decades (they make it seem so very easy dont they) you really have no idea of the mechanics and mental preparation that goes into every single golf stroke. You dont go and just start hacking away at the golf ball. If you do, your ball isnt going to go very far. Here are a few golf playing tips to get you off to a good start.

1) Start off by spending many hours at the driving range. You want to learn how to hit a ball before you decide to play a game of golf. It isnt rocket science if youre playing for fun (obviously no one starts out at a pro level) but spending precious hours at the driving range will save you a lot of money and a lot of frustration.

2) While at the driving range pay attention to how you stand, how you breathe, how you swing, and most importantly what the ball does after you hit it. Dont just keep hitting ball after ball without taking note of what you are doing and how your actions effect where the ball lands.

3) Dont believe everything you hear. Golfers are a friendly lot by nature and for the most part sincerely want to be helpful. Unfortunately, what works well for one golfer may be detrimental for your swing. If you want advice or help with your game, consult a pro (it is well worth the money and something I highly recommend).

4) Dont swing your club at the golf ball; swing your club through the golf ball. This is by far the best piece of advice Ive ever received about my golf game. So many of us focus on hitting the ball (thats what we want to do after all, right?) that we forget that the ultimate goal is to get the ball where we want it to go.

5) When addressing the ball, concentrate on where you want the ball to go rather than where the ball is at the moment. You are much more likely to hit the ball to the spot you are concentrating on. Try it; Im pretty sure you will be pleasantly surprised.

No advice is fool proof or one size fits all but these are good golf playing tips that have helped me out a lot in improving my golf game. Hopefully, they will serve you well also.
